As one of the top-grossing mobile games, Genshin Impact continues bringing impressive revenue from its massive user base. However, after the recent launch of the game’s version 2.1, player spending exploded, reaching new record highs.

According to data presented by Mejores Apuestas, in the first seven days of September after version 2.1 going live, mobile Genshin Impact players spent $151 million on in-app purchases, more than in the entire August.

Over 70 Million Downloads in Less than a Year

The Chinese video game publisher MiHoYo has put a strong emphasis on live operations ever since the launch of Genshin Impact in September 2020, regularly introducing new content and characters to the title to keep players engaged.

Version 2.1, known as Floating World Under the Moonlight, revealed new characters like Raiden Shogun and the free PlayStation-exclusive Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn. The latest update also enabled players to explore never-before-seen islands and a new weapon event wish and fishing system.

Such an approach has been driving a surge in the number of Genshin Impact players, with the game reaching impressive download figures even before its first anniversary.

The AppMagic data showed MiHoYo’s action role-playing game was downloaded around 4.5 million times each month since its release, except October 2020 as the record month to date, with the total number of downloads reaching 70 million in August this year.

Also, according to the AirNow data, the anime-style action RPG app has approximately 4.5 million monthly active users, with more than half of them using the iOS version of the game.

Total Revenue Hit $922 Million YTD

In less than a year since its release, Genshin Impact has become the No. 2 revenue-generating mobile game globally, following Tencent’s PUBG Mobile and ranking above hits like Pokémon GO and Roblox.

In the first nine months of the year, the action role-playing game grossed $923 million worldwide, $10 million more than Tencent’s Honor of Kings and $200 million more than Roblox or Pokémon GO.

Also, in March 2021, Genshin Impact became the fastest mobile gaming app to generate $1 billion in player spending worldwide. The RPG game hit this huge milestone just six months after its initial launch. The second-fastest app to generate $1 billion in player spending was Pokemon GO, doing so within nine months after launch.
